The First Time Manager: Understanding and Thriving in Your New Role
Who is This Program Designed to Help?
This is a 5-week, 1-on-1 virtual program that will meet through Zoom for approximately 90 minutes. Each session will be recorded, and a link sent to you for review and reference.
Whether you are new to managing a medical practice or have been in your position a few years, this program will set the foundation to become a “Peak Performance Manager.”
Beginning with a deep understanding as to “why” we are doing what we do and where we need to grow to become more successful at our position and leading those that we work side-by-side with each day in the practice to be successful as well.
This program is for any first-time manager who is ready to take the next steps in learning how they can manage better now by understanding and gaining knowledge of what their purpose is and how they can grow the people who work with them into highly-productive staff by learning how to have clarity of what they do and of what those they work with do. Understanding managing a team and what it takes is a process learned over time. The need to understand Human Resources as it pertains to hiring, interviewing, employee reviews, and keeping proper documentation is a must in management. Mastering the skill of self-management is essential to manage the team's time and run an efficient and organized practice.
Only when we personally grow, learn to manage, and improve ourselves can we then have influence to create an “A-Team” of players who want to build a successful practice with us.
Members will also receive two one-hour private consulting sessions either during the program or the six months following the program for follow-up and direction.
The $1495 price includes:
The full five-week program - five 90-minute sessions: Valued at $1995
Two one-hour private consulting sessions: Valued at $350 x 2 = $700
Total Value: $2695
Payable in 2 equal installments of $747.50.
Module Content for the 5-Week Program
Module #1: Knowing Your Job Description
In this coaching session we will create our job descriptions. Over the past two decades of working with physicians and their management staff, only about 10-20% of them had actual written job descriptions. This not only is our guide for what is expected of us but is it our insurance against failure if we learn the skills and can deliver what is required from us. Without a job description it is like getting in your car in California and wanting to go to New Jersey and you have no map, no GPS, no idea on how you are going to complete the task, but you are hoping that you can.
Module #2: Communication for Clarity, Correction and Team Function
People need to feel heard before they can hear. In good communication we need to gather the most information that the person is saying before we respond. Have you ever spoken to someone, and you know without a doubt that they really are not listening to you and have already drawn a conclusion to what you are saying before you even finish? How did this make you feel? Here is an interesting fact: The Chinese character for listen, which is pronounced ting is made up of four characters: the heart, the mind, the ears, and the eyes. In this module, we will discuss how to improve not only our communication skills but those of the entire team.
Module #3: Successful Team Building
Successful teams are constantly “sharpening the saw.”, as Stephen Covey states in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The team needs to continually review its effectiveness and learn, grow, and get better. Truth: Teams need to speak the truth to each other. This attribute falls away quickly by the error of omission. Not saying something when something needs saying. As a newer manager, confidence is necessary to lead the team and be able to tackle the tough areas and come out on the good side of difficulties. This module will go over the skills necessary and discuss some of the tough situations of managing people in a medical practice.
Module #4: Human Resources 101
Every manager needs to be versed in employment regulations. Each state has their own set of employment guidelines but most of them are somewhat the same. It is important to know how to get the information for your practice location so that you are abiding by your state laws, and this will be reviewed first. Next, we will go over hiring, interviewing, employee reviews, necessary documentation for your employee records and then knowing when and how to say goodbye.
Module #5: Self-Management and Keeping Your Finger on the Pulse of the Practice
Managing time and getting all the practice tasks done in a timely manner has always been a challenge. Ultimately, acting on managing your time is what needs to happen to master it. Now, multiply this by the number of people in the practice and what they need to get done and you can see the daily challenge.
Understanding what needs to be done and by whom is key to being successful. Not only do we need to learn to manage our time, but also teach our team how to manage their time as well.
Mastering how to use your time to the best of your advantage in whatever area you are working will maximize your potential to be more successful overall and have a better work and home life. Sounds nice, but is it that easy? This session will discuss key steps to learning how to become a better keeper of our time and also to oversee what is happening in the practice.
