Not all podiatrists are the same. Some seem to be barely scraping by, burnt out on all the challenges of owning and running a private practice—while others seem invincible and destined to succeed, as though everything they touch just naturally turns to gold. While some doctors are more successful than others, there's no magic or destiny in them. They are winners because they form simple habits and take simple steps that make all the difference. First and foremost, these doctors have a plan to achieve their goals.

Winners Have a Vision and Set Goals

Here's the truth: it's really hard to achieve any kind of success if you don't have a vision of what that success looks like—and not a vague vision, either. Undefined goals are too hard to achieve. They aren't something you can break down and work toward over time. Instead, they float over your head like a rain cloud, reminding you that you haven't reached them yet.

Vision is what motivates you to get up in the morning and go through the day-to-day drudge and challenges of podiatry. What is the purpose of your practice? How can it help you live the kind of life you want to live? What do you have to do in order to achieve this life? Where do you see yourself, and your practice, going? Vision and goals help you answer these questions and constantly work toward something.

Winners Adopt a Plan

Of course, while having vision and goals is the first step, you're still not going to achieve them if you don't adopt a plan to do so. Winners don't just have goals. They write them down, review them regularly, and establish plans to constantly work toward a few of them at a time every single day. Goals aren't something you can “wing” and hope they turn out for the best. You have to take intentional action.

When it comes to growing your practice, that means establishing the Four Pillars for your marketing and plotting out how you'll engage each pillar every single week or month. That idea bubbles with the words way you're constantly reaching out to patients—new and old—through every possible venue, again and again. All of the “home run” or “winning” practices among Top Practices members have adopted this plan for their marketing because it works. These practices don't try it for a few months and then slack off, either. They follow the plan and take steps to constantly refine it to reach all of their goals over time.

There's no silver bullet or magic formula to being successful in your podiatry practice. Vision and planning, however, make all the difference. If you're looking for ways to grow and transform your practice, don't try to wing it. Follow in the footsteps of successful podiatrists all around you: plan to succeed.

You don't have to try to go it alone, though! Hundreds of podiatrists have already found that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. You can learn so much from experts and the best and brightest in your field—which is why Top Practices is here.
